Yellow Book of Latin America and the Caribbean (2018-2019) Launch
The Institute of Latin American Studies of China Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and Social Sciences Academic Press (China) jointly released the annual report on Latin America and the Caribbean (2018-2019) on Novmber 20.
The Yellow Book consists of major report, situation report, bilateral relationship report and regional report. The theme of Annual report this year is “New Changes in Plilitcs Economy and Society in LAC and New Trends in China-LAC Cooperation”.
The Yellow Book systematically analyses the changes in economic growth, political ecology, social environment and international relations in LAC during the previous year, and summarizes some new issues and trends faced in the major Latin American countries’ development.
Yuan Dongzhen, deputy director of the Institute of Latin American Studies of CASS, said that, in the context of the continued changes in the world politics, economy and security, some new changes also have taken place in various fields in Latin America since 2018. The unstable economic growth and recession have produced a series of negative consequences, and increased the political and social instability and uncertainties in the region. Several Latin American countries are facing tremendous pressures from the alternation of ruling parties and the following policy adjustment. Although the anxiety and discontent in the society have increased in several countries, the social conflicts and contradiction in controllable generally in the region. There are some new changes in LAC’s regional cooperation while a new pattern of integration has graduall emerged. Some hot issues such as the Venezuelan crisis and the corruption continue to stir up the political situation in the region and have produced some negative impact. The United States has adjusted its foreign policy towards Latin America in an attempt to maintain its hegemony in the region. China – LAC cooperation continues to make new major progress, but is stll facingsome adverse conditions during the process of improving bilateral relations and cooperating on “the Belt and Road” initiative. We should pay attention to the nes changes and development in Latin America in order to make a correct judgment about Latin American situation and China – LAC cooperation.
