On December 28, 2021, the press conference of Latin America yellow book: development report of Latin America and the Caribbean (2020-2021) and the seminar on Latin America situation, jointly sponsored by the Latin American Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the social sciences literature press, were held at the Latin America Institute of the Chinese Academy of social sciences. Cai Jihui, deputy editor in chief of the social sciences literature press, and Chai Yu, director of the Latin American Institute, delivered speeches at the meeting. Gao Gao, deputy director of the Latin American Institute, presided over the meeting. More than 90 people from Party and government organs, scientific research institutes and news media attended the meeting.

At the seminar on the situation of Latin America, five scholars made speeches on the overall situation and development trend of Latin America from 2020 to 2021 and the sub fields of Latin America, such as politics, economy, society and foreign relations. Since 2020, the novel coronavirus pneumonia has been spreading continuously and widely in Latin America, and the number of confirmed cases and deaths has a high proportion in the world. Although Latin American countries have taken relatively rapid response measures, a series of structural constraints have undermined the effectiveness of epidemic prevention measures in Latin American countries. Under the continuous influence of COVID-19, the economic situation in Latin America has been in serious recession, the social situation has been seriously affected, and the political conflict has been temporarily frozen. At the same time, Latin American governments are in a weak position, and the cooperation and regional integration process of the regional countries around the epidemic has been limited. The fight against epidemic diseases in Latin America still mainly depends on the support and cooperation of extraterritorial forces.

In the free discussion session of the seminar, the participants had a warm exchange with the spokesperson on the inflation of Latin American economy, "development trap" issue, the ruling effectiveness of Latin American governments, the impact of the 2022 general election on China Latin America relations, the actual situation of the epidemic in Latin America, and the attitude and position of Latin American governments on the Beijing Winter Olympics.
